Today's phone photo of the day, I took this morning
in Brixham (Devon). It's a statue of William of Orange
marking the Spot where he landed with his army, on
5 November 1688. Apparently many people in Brixham
still have Dutch surnames because they are direct
descendants of the soldiers in that army.
There are also Dutch street names like Overgang
and Hellevoetsluis way.

In English history, when people talk about William
of Orange they generally mean William the third
of Orange a.k.a. King Billy. In Dutch History William
the first of Orange a.k.a. William the Silent is known
as William of Orange.

In 1945 this was the location of the Reich Chancellery
garden. On 30 April, roughly where the arrow is on
the picture, was the bomb crater in which the bodies
of Adolf and Eva Hitler were burned by Otto
Gunsche, Hitlers aide (just after he had stolen his dead
boss's watch). After Hitler's body was discovered by
the Russian's it was buried several times in different
locations. In 1970 it was dug up from it's final location
in Magdenburg by the "KGB" and fully destroyed.
According to one writer the ashes then ended up in the
Magdenburg sewage system, which seams like a very
appropriate resting place for the remains of the person
responsible for the deaths of an estimated 72 million
people during World War two.

Insider tours does a very interesting Third Reich tour,
that we did and I can strongly recommend for anyone
visiting Berlin and interested in the subject.

On the Top of Scafell Pike during a training run, last Saturday

On 9 and 10 June, together with 7 of my
colleagues, I will take part in an attempt to
complete the "3 peak challenge". With this
event we will be trying to raise money for
the Cancer Research institute.

The event is dedicated to Sandy Goodwin (the
wife of the person leading the team) who
unfortunately passed away in January this year
after a long and hard battle against this evil
disease. A disease which unfortunately has
probably touched many of your lives!

The ensure you we will need to go through hell
to earn your money. This is what the event is
about.

We will climb the 3 highest peaks in the UK
within 24 Hours:

England - Scafell Pike 978 meters
Scotland - Ben Nevis 1344 meters
Wales - Snowdon 1085 meters

These will all be done in succession in a 24
hour period including driving, some challenge?

Borough Market is London's oldest market. It
was Established on the south bank of the
Thames when Romans build the first London
bridge and people have been trading on this
site for over 2000 years. It's a beautiful
undercover food market and a truly
wonderful part of London's history.

Now some bright spark has decided to expand
the railway line running through the roof of the
market, which will also involve knocking down
23 of the beautiful listed and unlisted buildings
in the closely surrounding area. They already
have planning permission but are waiting for
funding.

There is a strong local campaign to put a stop
to this. If you know and love the market in its

Vicieuze cirkel Feyenoord

Wat afgelopen week met Feyenoord in Nancy is gebeurt vind ik heel erg. Zowel sportief als buiten het veld ging eigenlijk alles mis wat er mis kon gaan. Om daar wat aan te veranderen zal de club harde actie moeten ondernemen op deze beide fronten om te vermijden dat de club terecht komt in een vicieuze cirkel. Met een slechte reputatie door wangedrag van de supporters zullen niet veel bedrijven bereid zijn Feyenoord van meer financiële middelen te voorzien. Hierdoor wordt het veel moeilijker om sportieve verbeteringen aan te brengen in de vorm van het aantrekken van betere spelers. Als het sportief niet beter gaat zal het percentage onprettige lieden dat zich supporter noemt alleen maar toenemen omdat de “normale” supporter wegblijft. Daardoor zal het heel moeilijk worden het imago te verbeteren en meer sponsor gelden aan te trekken.

Om het imago te verbeteren moet de standaard die bepaald wat wel en niet toelaatbaar gedrag is in een stadion omhoog. Deze standaard zal verder moeten gaan dan wat al in de wet is geregeld. Dat betekend dat niet alleen mensen met een stadion verbod uit het stadion moeten worden geweerd, immers deze mensen zijn al vele stappen te ver gegaan, maar ook zij die simpel weg vervelend, lastig of agressief gedrag vertonen binnen de grenzen van de wet. In discotheken is dit al sinds jaar en dag een normale gang van zaken. Mensen die zich niet aan de regels van het “huis” willen houden worden uit het “huis” verwijdert. Dit betekent dat voor de “veiligheid” in het stadion niet alleen de regels van de wet bepalend zouden moeten zijn, maar de hogere standaard opgelegd door de club en afgestemd op het imago. Deze standaard zal moeten worden gehandhaafd door meer en beter opgeleide suposten en alleen mensen met een bewijs van goed gedrag kunnen naar het stadion blijven komen en een kaartje kopen voor uitwedstrijden. Dit zal op korte termijn de club meer geld kosten maar zou op langere termijn zeker vruchten afwerpen in de vorm van een verbeterd imago en meer sponsor gelden waardoor betere spelers kunnen worden aangetrokken en de sportieve prestaties hopelijk omhoog gaan.

Just proud to say that my team Feyenoord beat Ajax today in their own stadium with 2 goals to 1. International Dirk Kuyt scored the first goal for Feyenoord after only 16 minutes and Kalou finished the job when the second half was only 1 minute underway. Ajax could do something back but only when Snoyl on the Feyenoord side got send off after receiveing his second yellow card. Charisteas managed to score for Ajax but it was to late for the Amsterdam team to catch up. Good result for Feyenoord that is doing quite well so far in the Dutch competition with 9 points out of the first 3 matches.
